Mountain Modern

The Aspen Idea  is a true "modern" forward thinking idea, and, it was developed in 1949!  I was developed in 1949, my license plate is ZG (the original Aspen plate)!

Walter Paepcke formed a think tank of modernist thinkers, scientists, artists, academics and musicians and created what is now the Aspen Music Festival and Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies.  It is still growing, still modern and still strong.

They enlisted Eero Saarinen, you know him...even sat in his chairs!  Saarinen designed the first tent in 1949, later to be replaced by a more permanent structure by the beloved Aspenite Fritz Benedict, along Casttle Creek Road in 1965,  Mid-century modern at its peak.  Now the twenty-three acre campus, with the new completion of the Buchsbaum totally modern structure under the guidance of architect Harry Teague, is the command central for international students, musicians, colleagues, and in general great minds.  Teague also designed the Benedict Tent right in the heart of Aspen where music meets nature.

Aspen also boasts two major art museums, the Aspen Art Museum designed by Shigeru Ban and the Powers Art Center, a private museum housing a massive collection of Jasper Johns, in nearby Carbondale, designed by Hiroshi Manamori.

But hold on, you say, Aspen is a mining town turned rock star see and ski to be seen mecca.  Yes...and, no!

Aspen has long been on the cutting edge for cities in Colorado engaging in classic modern design, probably running a close second to the Flagstaff area of West Boulder.  It is amazing what can happen to a city or town or community when the citizens engage in recognized architects of pedigree.

For more information on Aspen, the Aspen Music Festival featuring a provocative menu of Russian and Eastern European composers, from Tschaikovsky and Shostakovich to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert with symphonys that resonate political turmoil of their time in world history.  They were modernists for the generations.

There is still plenty of August left!  Get to Aspen for the beauty of the Colorado Rocky Mountain High,  the modern architecture and the music, food and thoughts;  oh, and the real estate!   Contact me for more information on what to do in August in Denver and Aspen!
