The Eyes Have It

Eye contact, no, not a new class offering at all the major colleges and ,yes, almost a thing of the past. In today's world of texting, robo texting, IM messaging, tweets and on and on, eye contact is a forgotten form of communication. The average two year old can scroll through Mom's I-phone in seconds to find a favorite game. Many toddlers walk to the television screeen and slide their tiny hands across expecting the screen to move. The teenager is probably dutifully watching the same toddler from the couch but sending several simultaneous texts without looking at the electronic device. Walk into many a corporate meeting and you will see all heads down, listening to the speaker or checking email. Electronic communication is immediate and current, but it is not eye contact. Eye contact is one of the most critical tools available in negotiating a real estate transaction. Many a buyer has walked through a listing and made verbal comments, but the truth about the buyer's feeback appears when reading between the eyes. That same non verbal messaging occurs when writing contracts and negotiating contracts, much of the truth lies behind the contacts. The email contracts are fast and immediate yet devoid of eye contact and the instant messaging the eyes reveal.
