Why Denver?

Why not Denver! That was the remark quoted from Pierre Berge - Yves Saint Laurent Foundation when asked why Denver was chosen as the only city to have the honor of exhibiting Yves Sain Laurent The Retrospective. And, boy howdy, Denver lost its cowtown image with this exhibit, a sweeping retrospective of the designer's forty years of creativity. The presentation represents the famed designer's career from his days as head of the House of Dior in 1958 through 2002. The exhibit features a selection of two hundred haute couture garments along with drawings, paintings, films that were the inspiration behind his work. It begins with Dior and winds through his "gender revolution" to the "scandalous collection" to "friendships and dialogues with art" to the "iconic tuxedo" to the "last ball". One area displays over 750 pieces or sheets of fabric swatches with color pairings for his famed haute couture designs. For a man who claimed his favorite color was black, this room displays the nuance behind the genius. Forty tuxedos are displayed on staggered mannequins that reach the height of the vaulted room with walls lined in black satin, and the evening gowns are paraded down red carpet stairs with a black satin backdrop, with film images of a grand ballroom that is enhanced by the angle and depth of the Liebskind designed wing of the Denver Art Museum.
